After blowing up some ghetto ride last week this update will be relatively tame.  However, the pace is picking up as people are gearing up for some shooting.  We went through the normal summer slow down with the exception of the debt ceiling spike in gun sales.

It is interesting what external factors drive sales.  Generally in good economical times people use credit cards more and tend to buy more premium grade products.  In poor economic conditions people generally buy the more utilitarian items.

However, what were seeing across the board people are spending with cash and investing in high to premium quality firearms.  We are also experiencing a constant demand for our custom AR rifles in both 5.56 and 308 platforms.  (We think owning multiple guns are a far safer investment in one’s life and prosperity then with the current crop of hedge fund billionare Nebraska moguls who demand we pay more. Jackass.)

Additionally with more people becoming familiar with suppressors (which some would call a novelty) almost every one of our custom rifles is supplied with a suppressor.  We’re not seeing this as much yet in our handgun sales yet but we believe with more people arming up for home defense this will become a priority.

Last week we provided one of our clients (our picture framer) and her husband with some range time to get familiar with some home defense guns.  What was interesting, Susie (this is not her real name and anyway I don’t know any Asians that would name their daughter Susie) was the driving factor in wanting some home protection and her husband John (this is an alias as well) was somewhat concerned that Susie wanted a gun. 

We invited Susie and John to the range since their exposure to home defense scatter -guns and handguns were limited.  Additionally, we liked her attitude that one gun was not sufficient.  So we provided them with a quick lesson on operating a pistol grip Mossberg 500.  In less than 25 rounds between the two of them, they were successfully hitting a paper plate with at least 1 of 2 shots when we called “gun”.

Susie also wanted a 9mm so we brought a couple of options out to test.  The interesting part was John was not completely on board with the project, but we can assure you within a couple of mags going through the Glock he was really enjoying himself.  We also brought our suppressed Ruger 22/45, which Susie really enjoyed as well.  (We explained that she still needs to be proficient with the 9 but the 22 will definitely make the range time more fun and enjoyable.)

During our range time the most noticeable reaction Susie had was flinging and closing her eyes when pulling the trigger.  When we handed her the suppressed 22 and had her remove her hearing protection her eyes remained open and the flinching went away.  We also let her try our suppressed G23.  Here she was able to operate a larger caliber gun with reduced flinching and kept her eyes open.

My friends this is an important and salient point.  With criminal activity on the rise in home invasions and simple street thugery (oh that’s right the mayor implemented a curfew, guess where these punks are going, to your freaking house and having a party), it’s imperative that not only the husband know how to use a gun but all household adults.  (In our house we’re not waiting.)  (If you’re a liberal go see the mayor for protection.) 

(Incidentally, you should all review 911 response times for your area as well as find out what the PD is not responding to.  Just remember a 45AC travels at approximately 1000fps.  For Ma Bell to connect you to a 911 operator 5 – 15 seconds, that’s once you’ve dialed.  And for a squad car to show up traveling at 50mph?)

This is where we feel a suppressor becomes more than a novelty.  Susie masterfully handled the 22 and questioned its ability to stop a crack smokin hood.  Although it’s not the optimal, 22 CCI stingers will bounce around and wreak havoc on their internals, but it’s not as defining of a moment in their life as a 230gr jacketed hallow point or 00 buck would be. 

We also wrapped up one of our 260cal builds.  This is for one of our local friends who has a few firearms but wanted something that made a statement.  This rifle makes a statement not only in looks but in quality.

This rifle spared no expense on getting the premium grade equipment and a totally kickass hydo dipped black marble winter cammo job.  The rifle was built with the following equipment:

*With this rifle we recommend 120grn SMK HPBT or Hornaday Amax bullets. 

The 260Rem is a very interesting round as well.  And when he was looking for something different not only in looks we offered up the 260Rem.  This rifle will have the blast of a 308Win and the recoil of a .223, it is extremely flat shooting round good for 1000yd shots, and closely approaches the ballistics of a 300Win Mag.  The only draw back we see with this caliber is the availability of match grade ammo, but factory hunting loads are readily available.

We also went out to the range for another test of our B&B suppressors.  We’re still working with the 5.56 and need to get a bolt gun to test it with.  We also ran some more test with the 7.62 on the Tikka and had very impressive results.

We’re also planning to have a competitive shoot on October 22, 2011.  The details are still being worked out but it will be held down in Garnett, KS.  Our good friend Jerry from G-Trig is helping organize the range events and Savage Rifles will also have a display setup.
